(Washington, DC) - Have Florida's election reforms gone far enough to rectify irregularities that came to light in the 2000 presidential election? Will the new measures have an impact on impending mid-term elections? Will problems that were not addressed by election reforms be resolved? Did the Department of Justice go far enough in investigating charges of voting rights violations?
These are among the issues the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights will probe when it returns to Miami on June 20 to assess reforms the state instituted following the 2000 elections. Leon County Elections Supervisor Ion Sancho, University of Florida Professor Richard K. Scher and NAACP Florida Chapter President Adora Obi Nweze are among the confirmed panelists for the Commission's daylong Florida Voting Rights Briefing. Other invited officials include Governor Jeb Bush, who has been given an open invitation to accommodate his busy schedule, and Secretary of State Katherine Harris.
