Washington, DC - Today's Supreme Court decisions in the University of Michigan affirmative action cases are consistent with the United States Commission on Civil Rights' longstanding support of diversity and equal education opportunity.
Dr. Mary Frances Berry, Chair of the Commission, stated, "Over many years the Commission has repeatedly recognized that affirmative action is instrumental in expanding educational opportunities to communities of color and promoting diversity at institutions of higher learning. We are pleased that the Supreme Court has reaffirmed its commitment to equal opportunity for all."
The Commission has frequently focused its attention on issues of equal opportunity
in education. The most recent study on the subject concerned percentage plans
and found that this system was not an adequate replacement for affirmative action.
The Commission's work has also highlighted the inferior K-12 education received
by many children of color. "Now is the time for everyone who truly cares
about education and equal opportunity to work toward ensuring that all children
receive an adequate K-12 education," said Berry.
