The Commission enforces the West Virginia Human Rights and Fair Housing Acts, each of which is substantially equivalent to Federal civil rights statutes. In addition, the Commission, in cooperation with other State agencies, local governments, community organizations, business, and labor, strives to enhance the level of tolerance and mutual respect for all citizens in West Virginia.

The HHRC files and investigates complaints of discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations based on race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, age (40 and over), blindness, disability, or, only in housing, familial status (children). The Commission has enforcement powers and conducts administrative hearings when necessary.
