The Northern Mariana Islands Advisory Committee (“Committee”) to the United States Commission on Civil Rights (“Commission”) will hold its first in-person briefing on Friday, September 1, 2023 (ChST). The purpose of this meeting is to collect testimony from various stakeholders and the public on the Committee’s selected project topic, “Access to Adequate Health Care for Incarcerated Individuals Within the Northern Mariana Islands’ Justice System.” The testimony received will help inform the Committee when drafting the findings and recommendations in their report, which will be submitted to the Commission.
Committee Chair Catherine Cachero states, “This issue has been a serious ongoing problem in the Northern Mariana Islands for decades. The Committee is highly interested in hearing directly from impacted individuals about their experiences related to access to adequate medical care for those within the Northern Mariana Islands’ Justice System. The Committee is also looking forward to the testimony of experts, advocates, and government officials. We hope to hear from a diverse, cross-section of our community in order to provide as much relevant information and practical recommendations to federal and CNMI authorities to ensure equal and adequate healthcare to all members of our community.”
