The Utah Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights will hold its fifth in a series of virtual, public briefings on the civil rights implications of disparate outcomes in the state’s K-12 education system. This investigation will analyze whether this system has a discriminatory impact on students on the basis of race, color, disability status, national origin, and/or sex. The Committee will provide the Commission with their findings and recommendations on this topic.

Committee Chairperson Jani Iwamoto said, “The Utah Advisory Committee looks forward to hearing diverse perspectives on the efficacy of protections provided by federal laws that prohibit discrimination in educational institutions. The Committee is particularly interested in understanding the extent to which these protections are sufficient to address concerns regarding equal access to education in Utah. The Committee will use the testimony received to draft a report, advising the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights about important issues in support of the Commission’s mission to inform the development of national civil rights policy and enhance enforcement of federal civil rights laws.”
After the Chair announces the conclusion of the briefing, she will invite members of the public to make brief statements on the topic, with each statement not exceeding five minutes.
